When Marriott wanted to drum up excitement for the opening of their flagship Marriott Marquis location in Chicago, they turned to IMG LIVE with a simple question—how do you ensure a new building stands out in bustling downtown Chicago? The experiential marketing agency’s answer? Hire bluemedia and light up the sky with an impressive building illumination, drawing the attention of thousands all around the city.
The modern 40-story Marriott Marquis features 1,205 guest rooms and more than 93,000 square feet of meeting space. It’s directly connected to McCormick Place convention center, and close to the city’s lakefront and many attractions like Millennium Park and Soldier Field. To increase buzz for this hotel opening, the bluemedia team came up with an original light design comprised of Sharpy Clay Paky moving lights, which are typically used in theater productions and concert venues, all controlled by an intelligent lighting console.
The Marriott Marquis Chicago lights were beamed onto the building and more than one thousand feet up in the air, and could be seen from miles away. But even nearby, from outside the neighboring McCormick Place convention center, the building illumination was impressive. Red lights were fixed on the Marriott, while blue lights moved around, creating a unique effect with bright, bold shapes. This illumination ran over the course of three nights to promote the flagship location launch.
The bluemedia team overcame Chicago’s winter weather during an eight-hour, outside installation. It took a crew of six technicians to set up, program and calibrate the building illumination for the Marriott Marquis, and ultimately, the project not only highlighted Marriott’s new property, but IMG LIVE and bluemedia’s awe-inspiring creative and technical work as well!
